Online retailer Amazon has finally revealed how many Prime members it has. The information comes from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, who revealed the numbers on Wednesday through his annual letter to shareholders.
The Amazon Prime membership has been around for years but the company had never revealed how many members it has. The membership, which costs $99 a year, offers things such as free two day shipping and access to the Prime Pantry section, which sells hygiene products, snacks, candy and many other items.
Before the numbers were revealed, research companies could only guess how many Prime members the company had. Throughout the years, there had been reports of huge increases of Prime members but Amazon had never given an exact number.
Amazon is not the first company to offer annual memberships. Several other companies are doing the same but the numbers for Amazon are much higher than some of its competition. The online retailer does not hold the top position of most memberships though. That position is currently held by Netflix, which has 125 million subscribers around the world.
The numbers from Amazon are still impressive, considering that the Prime memberships are available in the US and a few other countries. Netflix’s streaming service is available in a lot of countries.
The Prime membership has been a success for Amazon, which has continued adding services and benefits to it. The free two day shipping is a nice benefit but the company also offers things such as movie and music streams, access to the Prime Pantry section and the Prime Exclusive Phones.
Estimates recently revealed that Prime memberships are worth the expense for the online retailer since members usually spend twice as much as those who are not members. The online retailer has also created a Prime Day to celebrate its birthday.
Amazon Prime Day started in 2015 as the online retailer celebrated its 20th birthday. Prime Day has returned ever since, offering huge deals and discounts on many products. The day has set sales records for the company and research companies have revealed that it has also brought lots of new Prime members.
Amazon introduced the Prime service back in 2005 for an annual fee of $79. At the time, the service only offered free two day shipping in the US on eligible purchases. The membership now costs $99 but the online retailer has added many other benefits throughout the years.
